The primary years are an age of reason, and intensive mental activity. These children can be characterised by their questioning minds, their ability to abstract and imagine, their moral and social orienting and their unlimited energy for research and exploration.
Cycle 1
Materials that are familiar from Cycle 1 are revisited during this stage of education but now become known as geometry, geography, grammar and algebra. Primary children look for larger meanings, correspondences and classifications. They seek to attain order and synthesis in the mental environment. Excursions and day trips are an important part of the programme, giving exposure to many aspects of the society and world of which they will soon be part. Our intention is that the children will be well-prepared and confident individuals, and informed and compassionate members of society.
Cycle 2 & 3.
Cycle 2 & 3 is a time of great expansion and intellectual growth. Having acquired a sound grasp of the basics in pre-primary, children are now ready and willing to acquire culture and to discover the world and their place in it. Their thirst for knowledge is such that by age 12 they will have been introduced to many of the areas of study usually reserved for the secondary years. In Montessori classrooms subjects are not taught in isolation but integrated through out aspects of learning.
